1. The Legend of Rawa Pening
Once upon a time, there was a little poor boy came into a little village. He was very hungry and weak. He knocked at every door and asked for some food, but nobody cared about him. Nobody wanted to help the little boy. Finally, a generous old woman helped him. She gave him shelter and a meal.
When the boy wanted to leave, this old woman gave him a lesung, a big wooden mortar for pounding rice. She reminded him, if there is a flood you must save yourself by using lesung as a boat. The little boy was happy and thanked to the old woman.
The little boy continued his journey. While he was passing through the village, he saw many people gathering on the field. The boy came closer and saw a stick stuck in the ground. People challenged each other to pull out that stick. Everybody tried, but nobody succeeded. Can I try?; asked the little boy. The crowd laughed mockingly. The boy wanted to try his luck so he stepped forward and pulled out the stick. He could do it very easily. Everybody was dumbfounded.
Suddenly, from the hole left by stick, water spouted out. It did not stop until it flooded the village. And no one was saved from the water except the little boy and the generous old woman who gave him shelter and meal. As she told him, he used the lesung; as a boat and picked up the old woman.
The whole village became a huge lake. It is now known as Rawa Pening Lake in Salatiga, Central Java, Indonesia.
Legenda Rawa Pening
Pada jaman dahulu, ada seorang bocah miskin datang ke sebuah desa kecil. Dia sangat lapar dan lemah. Dia mengetuk setiap pintu rumah untuk meminta beberapa makanan, namun tidak ada yang perduli. Tak ada seorangpun yang mau menolong bocah kecil itu. Akhirnya, ada seorang wanita tua yang baik hati menolongnya. Dia memberi makanan dan tempat tinggal untuknya.
Ketika anak itu ingin pergi, wanita tua itu memberi sebuah lesung, yaitu sebuah mortir kayu besar penumbuk padi. Dia mengingatkan, jika terjadi banjir, kamu harus menyelamatkan diri dengan lesung itu sebagai perahu. Anak kecil itu senang dan berterima kasih kepada wanita tua tersebut.
Anak kecil tersebut kembali melanjutkan perjalanannya. Ketika ia sedang melewati desa, dia melihat banyak orang sedang berkumpul di lapangan. Anak itu berjalan mendekat dan melihat sebuah batang kayu menancap di tanah. Orang-orang tersebut saling menantang untuk menarik batang kayu tersebut. Setiap orang mencoba, namun tidak ada yang sanggup. Bisakah saya mencobanya?; ucap si anak kecil itu. Para kerumunan orang tersebut tertawa mengejek. Anak itu mencoba peruntungannya kemudian maju kedepan dan menarik tongkat kayu tersebut. Dia bisa melakukannya dengan sangat mudah. Semua orang tercengang.
Tiba-tiba, dari lubang tongkat kayu tadi, air menyembur keluar. Semburan itu tidak bisa berhenti sehingga menyebabkab banjir di desa itu. Dan tak ada seorangpun yang selamat kecuali anak kecil itu dan wanita tua yang murah hati yang memberinya makan dan tempat tinggal. Seperti yang pernah wanita tua katakan, dia menggunakan lesung sebagai perahu dan membawanya.
Seluruh desa berubah menjadi danau yang besar. Sekarang ini dikenal dengan nama Danau Rawa Pening yang tempatnya di Salatiga, Jawa Tengah, Indonesia.
2. ThenLegend of Roro Jonggrang
Once upon a time, there was a powerful prince named Bandung Bondowoso. In a war, Bandung Bondowoso killed Prabu Baka. Then, Bandung Bondowoso fell in love with Prabu Baka’s daughter. Her name was Roro Jonggrang.
Bondowoso wanted to marry this beautiful princess. However, the princess hated him because he had killed her father. Roro Jonggrang was thinking of a way to refuse the marriage proposal. Finally, she decided to marry Bandung Bondowoso if he could build a thousand temples before the dawn.
Being helped by the genies, Bondowoso built the temples very fast. Roro Jonggrang wanted to fail him. She asked all women in the village to hit the rice. The rooster crowed signing that morning was coming. All genies left the project until 999 temples because they tought morning came afterward.
Finally, Bondowoso knew that Roro Jonggrang tricked him. He was very angry so he cursed Roro Jonggrang into a rock statue “Arca”. Roro Jonggrang statue is inside Candi Prambanan to complete the project of a thousand temples.
Legenda Roro Jonggrang
Pada
jaman dahulu, ada seorang pengeran yang berkuasa bernama Bandung
Bodowoso. Pada sebuah peperangan, Bandung Bondowoso berhasil membunuh
Prabu Baka. Kemudian, Bandung Bondowoso jatuh hati pada anak perempuan
Prabu Baka. Namanya adalah Roro Jonggrang.
Bondowoso
ingin menikahi putri cantik ini. Namun, putri benci padanya karena
telah membunuh ayahnya. Roro Jonggrang sedang berpikir bagaimana cara
untuk menolak permintaan menikah. Akhirnya, dia memutuskan untuk menikah
dengan Bandung Bondowoso jika dia mampu membangun seribu candi sebelum
pagi tiba.
Dengan
dibantu para jin, Bondowoso membangun candi dengan sangat cepat. Roro
Jonggrang berencana untuk menggagalkannya. Dia meminta seluruh perempuan
yang ada di desa menumbuk padi. Para ayam jago berkokok menandakan
bahwa pagi telah tiba. Semua jin meninggalkan pekerjaan tersebut sampai
999 candi karena mereka berpikir pagi telah datang.
Akhirnya, Bondowoso tahu bahwa Roro Jonggrang menipunya. Dia sangat marah sehingga mengutuk Roro Jonggrang menjadi sebuah patung batu "Arca". Patung Roro Jonggrang berada di dalam Candi Prambanan guna melengkapi pembuatan dari 1000 candi.
3. The Legend of Danau Toba
In one village of North Sumatera, there lived a poor farmer named Toba. One day, he went fishing. Luckily, he got a beautiful goldfish. He carried it home and planned to cook it. When he got home, the fish turned into a beautiful woman.
The woman told that she was cursed. She asked Toba to keep it as a secret. Toba agreed it only with one condition that the woman would marry him. Then they got married and soon had one child named Samosir. This boy liked to eat much food.
One day, his mother asked Samosir to bring lunch to his father. On the way to the ricefield, he stopped and ate most of the food. After that, he gave the rest of the lunch to his father. Toba was very angry and shouted at Samosir “You, the fish kid, you are so greedy!” Samosir cried and ran toward his mother. He asked his mother why his father called him the fish kid.
The woman was really upset that Toba broke his promise. The woman and his son disappeared. Soon there were springs that caused a vast lake. It’s called Toba Lake. The land in the middle of the lake is called Samosir Island.
4. The Legend of Sangkuriang
In ancient times, there was a girl named Dayang Sumbi who lived in West Java. She was also a clever dan smart girl. The prince of heavenly kingdom of Kahyangan fell in love with her beauty and intelligence. He wanted to make Dayang Sumbi as his wife. Prince came to his father and asked for his permission to marry Sumbi. There was a rule that people from Kahyangan could never live along the human. But, his father gave prince a permission with one one condition. When they had a child, the prince had to transfrom into a dog. The prince accepted his father’s condition.
One day, the prince and Sumbi got married and lived happily in the jungle. Then, Sumbi gave birth to a son. So, the prince kept his promise to change into a dog named Tumang. Their son named was Sangkuriang. He was very handsome like the prince. Every day, he went to hunt animals in the jungle. One day, when Sangkuriang was hunting for the animals, he unintentionally killed Tumang. He missed his shot and the arrow hit Tumang. Then, he went to home and told his mother about the dog.
“What did you do?” She was so angry and took a cooking tool. She hit Sangkuriang’s head with it. She was so sad and cried a lot.
Looking his mother cried, Sangkuriang felt sorry to her. However, he was confused. He tought his mother loved a dog more than him. Then, he dicided to leave his mother for a journey. In the morning, Sumbi felt better and stopped crying. She went to the jungle to find Sangkuriang. However, she could not find him. She was exhausted and decided to go to house. In her dream, she met her husband.
“My love, don’t be sad. take my heart from my body. Then, soak it with the water, use the water to bath. You will look young forever.” said her husband. She followed the prince’s order. So, she looked more beutiful and younger.
After many years, Sangkuriang stopped in a village when he was on a journey. In the village, he met a beautiful girl and fell in love with her. He wanted to marry the girl he loved. He didn’t notice that the village was his homeland. Even, the beautiful girl he loved was his own mother, Dayang Sumbi. One day, Sangkuriang asked Sumbi to fix his turban on his head. Sumbi was so shocked when she find the scar on Sangkuriang’s head. A scar was at the same place where she hit Sangkuriang’s head in years ago.
Then, Sumbi asked a guidance from the God. After praying, she was sure that the young man was Sangkuriang. She decided to prevent Sangkuriang for marrying her. However, she didn’t want to hurt him bya cancelling the wedding. So, she had a condition for Sangkuriang. Sangkuriang had to make a lake and a beautiful boat in one night.
Sangkuriang took her challenge without a doubt because he had mastered some strong magics. After the sun set, he went to the hill. He called many genies to help him. He commanded the genies to build a lake. He also gave an order to genies to make a big boat from the trees. In short time, Sangkuriang and his genies almost finished their work.
Dayang Sumbi realized that Sangkuriang would finish her order. She immediately asked all the women in the village. She asked them to make a wave from a long red scarf. It looked as if the sun would rise immediately. This condition made the roosters crowing. The farmer also prepared to go to paddy field.
The genies immediately stopped their work and left Sangkuriang alone. Sangkuriang was so angry because he could not finish his work. He was failed to marry Sumbi. He kicked the unfinished boat with all of his power . It flew and landed on a valley. After landed, the boat turned into a mountain which is called mount Tangkuban Perahu until now. He also kicked the lake. The water drained from the lake and becoming a wide plain area. The area became a city which is called Bandung.
